Amos Fortune Grave Site

Some of Jaffrey's prominent citizens from three centuries are buried behind the Meeting House including Amos Fortune. Historical notes and a grave map are located at the entrance to the Old Burial Ground.

Amos Fortune arrived in New England as a slave, but purchased his freedom in 1769. He moved to Jaffrey with his wife Violet (a former slave whom he had purchased) and became a successful tanner, leaving bequests to the church and school when he died in 1801. Jaffrey residents started the Amos Fortune Forum in his memory in 1947.
