Mountain, Mills & More
As part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's successful "Main Street Program", Jaffrey's downtown has become an exciting force for positive change. In the past six years, TEAM Jaffrey has worked closely with the Chamber of Commerce and within the business community to effect these changes: bringing activities downtown including the popular "Scarecrows on the Common" in October, "Christmas in Jaffrey", and other events designed to get people downtown. By working with downtown businesses on important visual and commercial issues, TEAM Jaffrey has been a successful catalyst in both preserving and presenting Jaffrey for now and the future.
While many businesses have endured with great success, others are now joining alongside them with equal triumph. Downtown Jaffrey is now home to many antique shops, galleries and a good offering of restaurants for all budgets and palates. The Jaffrey Mills complex, a part of the National Register of Historic Places, is the "jewel in the crown" of Jaffrey's downtown district. An adaptive re-use plan is currently in place to offer condominiums, shops and office space within its structure.
An exciting development in 2004 was the fundraising effort towards restoring and reopening the Park Theatre on Jaffrey's Main Street. Well-kept behind the scenes of Roy's Bike Shop, the Park Theatre has remained dormant for almost thirty years with its perfectly preserved theater interior-including seats and bold carpeting-and vintage Art Deco charm. Now it awaits a new birth as part of the downtown scene.
