Highways & Facilities Department
Mission
The Highway Department maintains and improves all Town highways, sidewalks, parking lots, storm water collection systems, dams, and other related public infrastructure. It is the department's responsibility to maintain said roadways and infrastructure for safe public travel and use regardless of weather conditions. This mission is achieved through preventative maintenance, long-term planning for improvements, and prompt emergency response to critical situations.
- Street light is out or cycles on & off?
-
Streetlights are maintained by Eversource. To report the light to Eversource, you may complete a service request form on this website or contact the office.
- Why does Highway Department spread salt and a short time later plow it up?
-
The Department practices anti-icing techniques common through New England. The application of salt or other anti-icing materials allows a brine solution to form to keep the snow from packing to the cold road surface and making plowing more effective.
- Street sign is missing?
-
Please complete a service request form or contact the office. Replacement signs are ordered from a vendor and may take several weeks to replace. We maintain a small stock of traffic control signs, such as stop signs. These signs are replaced soon after we are notified that the signs are missing.
- I have a pipe under my driveway that is plugged and backs up when it rains. Does the Town maintain it?
-
The pipes under driveways are maintained by the property owner. They were installed when the driveway was installed.
- Pothole?
-
Report the pothole location on the service request form or contact the office.
- Does Town supply salt or sand to residents?
-
The town supplies a mixture of sand and salt to residents for ice control. The pipe is located at the rear of the old salt shed at 23 Knight Street. This pile is for residents only and should be used on their own driveways and walks.
- The Town damaged my mailbox, lawn or fence with snow plow.
-
We try our best not to damage installations close to the edge of the travel way, but occasionally, due to adverse conditions, damage sometimes occurs. The Town is not responsible for these damages. Anything installed within the right-of-way is done so at the sole risk of the property owner. Please see our Winter Operations Policy (PDF).
