1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The goal of this program is to encourage children to read 1,000 books before they enter kindergarten. Does that sound difficult? Not really! If you read one book a night, you will read 365 books in one year. If you read three books a night, you will complete the challenge in just one year. As a parent, this is a great opportunity to create happy memories and to encourage lifelong learning.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

Any child from birth until he or she enters kindergarten may participate in the program.

HOW TO SIGN UP

Be sure to pick up the FREE materials for the program. Your child will receive a tote bag to color and a Record Keeping Sheet to record progress. In addition, your child will choose a cute animal name tag that will be placed on our animal themed tracking wall. Each time your child reads 100 books, their name tag will move one level ahead.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Read with your child.

Keep track of books with the simple Record Keeping Sheet provided by the library. All you need to do is color in one circle for each book read! What happens if you read the same book more than once? Record the book EACH time because we know young children love repetition. If other people read to your child, record that as well.

Helpful tip: Place the Record Keeping Sheet in a safe place!

HOW TO CELEBRATE MILESTONES

Every time your child reads 100 books, they will receive a sticker telling everyone how many books they’ve read, PLUS, your child’s name tag will be moved ahead one level on the tracking wall. Just bring your Record Keeping Sheet to the library and see a librarian. Will you get a new sheet to track books? Absolutely!

Reach the 500 Book Milestone and choose a new book to keep to add to your home library!

Wow! The big moment arrives when your child has read 1,000 books! Come to the library with your Record Keeping Sheet and celebrate! Your child will get a sticker, a special Reading Buddy (stuffed bear), and your child’s name tag will move one final time to be proudly displayed at the 1,000 book level on the tracking wall!
