JAFFREY NATURAL RESOURCES INVENTORY 2024

2024 Jaffrey Natural Resources Inventory

The Jaffrey Conservation Commission works to identify, preserve, and maintain Jaffrey's natural resources. About once a decade we conduct a Natural Resources Inventory (NRI). 2024 is our NRI year and we plan a number of research visits to different ecosystem types such as wetlands or woods, and to different wildlife habitats to catalog wildlife and plant diversity. This research is critical to maintaining our town's water quality, wildlife, flood resilience, recreational and educational activities, and helps us keep Jaffrey a beautiful destination. The 2024 NRI is being conducted by Moosewood Ecological LLC.

We invite you to help us with the 2024 Jaffrey Natural resource Inventory. Roughly 50 - 75 properties will be visited for the NRI. The properties are chosen for:

representation of a particular ecosystem type, such as old growth woodland,

features critical to known important watershed and wetland areas,

lack of sufficient data from prior surveys or state databases.

Only a small number of Jaffrey properties will be surveyed in-person. Don't feel bad if your property is not selected! We can only afford to send researchers to a limited number of sites and we need representatives of each important ecosystem in Jaffrey.  If your property is selected, we hope you will cooperate! This is research for the benefit of Jaffrey.

We need written permission for the NRI researchers to enter your property. The principal researchers for this project are Jeffry Littleton, Laura Deming, Steven Lamonde, and Jaime McGuigan. One or more of these people may need to make a brief visual inspection of the natural resources. Sensitive information (such as rare species or rare habitats) gathered on your property will not be shared with the public.  No markers, signs, sampling equipment, or any other evidence of their passing will be left on your property. Permission is being sought for foot access only, since many of the natural resources are land-locked and difficult to reach by road or public trail.

If your property is selected, we can only come if you return the permission form authorizing us to come. If no permission form is returned, we cannot come.

We will provide a letter of consent that releases you from any liability for injury, negligence, or otherwise that may arise from any researcher crossing your property. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. For your convenience, please use the stamped envelope to return the authorization form, whether you are denying access or allowing access to your property.
