Purpose: Scholarship

FOURTH: I give, devise and bequeath all of the rest, residue and remainder of my property, both real estate and personal property, both tangible and intangible as follows: 20% to the Trustees of Trust Funds for the Town of Jaffrey, to be held in trust for the purpose of funding a scholarship for college education for a Jaffrey student graduating from Conant High School. The trust will be in honor of my wife Carolyn, and should be named, "The Carolyn Gordon Scholarship Trust". My trustees shall consult with the Conant High School administration and faculty to seek advice regarding a worthy recipient of this scholarship gift. However, the decision of my trustees shall be final with respect to the selection of the scholarship recipient. The amount of the scholarship gift shall be the amount of the income generated by the trust principal annually, less any administrative expenses.

Dear Frank:

Enclosed is the check from the Gordon Merrill estate payable to the Trustees of Trust Funds for the Town of Jaffrey in the amount of $100,000.00.

As I explained to you earlier this 'week, the final accounting will not be filed until after the audit period has expired for the IRS tax return. I expect there will be a small additional amount which will be added to this gift.

Please make sure the name of this trust appears as follows: The Carolyn and Gordon Merrill Scholarship Trust. I have also enclosed a receipt for you to sign and return to me in the enclosed self-addressed stamped envelope. Please call me if you have any questions.

Attached is a copy of a letter from Attorney David Tower providing the pertinent portion of the Last Will and Testament of Gordon Merrill to establish the subject scholarship trust. Also attached are the obituaries for both decedents.

The amount we have received is $100,000 (see attached letter) which is to be placed in trust and invested by the Trustees of the Trust Funds. The income derived from this fund will be used to provide a scholarship to a Jaffrey student graduating from Conant High School. The trustees shall consult with the Conant High School administration and faculty to seek advice regarding a worthy recipient of this scholarship.

The trustees respectfully request your review of the letters and acceptance of this scholarship trust for the purpose stated above.

Obituary: Carolyn F. Merrill, 76, of Colton Drive Jaffrey died Saturday April 19, 2008 at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough following a brief illness. She was born April 1, 1932 in Bangor Maine, daughter of the late Warren and Thelma (Allen) McNeil. She was a 1951 graduate of Conant High School in Jaffrey. Following high school she began working as a medical secretary and for the next twelve years Drs. C. Francis Wozmak and Franklin W. Sterling in Jaffrey employed her. She then moved and began working at the Keene Clinic, first at its former Main Street location and then at the present Court Street location. She retired in 1977. Mrs. Merrill has been a resident of Jaffrey since 2003, having previously lived for 27 years in Keene and 16 years in Troy before that.

Her husband stated the she enjoyed everything she did. Following retirement she enjoyed sewing, weaving, crafts and computers. While living on West Hill in Keene, she and her husband enjoyed maple sugaring and cultivating blueberries. She particularly enjoyed the visits from all the wild animals that lived on their property. Following her husband's retirement, they enjoyed traveling together. She is survived by her husband of forty-nine years, Gordon C. Merrill of Jaffrey, an aunt Hazel Allen of Brownville, ME and several cousins.

Obituary: Gordon C. Merrill, 78, of Colton Drive in Jaffrey, died December 20, 2011 at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough following a period of failing health. He was born August 13, 1933 at home in Jaffrey, son of the late Leonard C. and Mary (Burgoyne) Merrill. He was a 1951 graduate of Conant High School in Jaffrey. During his high school years he worked for Wade's Motors, Camp Wa-Klo and Overview Farms. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served at Westover AFB in Massachusetts and was later stationed in Japan. After his discharge in 1956 he entered New Hampshire Voc-Tech in Manchester. In 1958 he began his employment with Fairfield Motors in Keene as a mechanic. He became Service Manager in 1962 and held that position until his retirement in 1989. Following his retirement Gordon enjoyed gardening, cutting his winter wood supply, making furniture for family and friends, maple sugaring, and all of the animals that visited him and his wife daily. His wife of forty nine years Carolyn F. McNeil, died April 19, 2008. He is survived by nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by his brothers Richard, Alfred and Lyman, and his sisters Dorothy and Phyllis.

Cemetery: Private burial in St. Patrick Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
